REGISTRATION CLOSED – FUTURE DATES TBD
“The best CE class I’ve ever taken!” said more than one participant. Enjoy the day exploring the healing qualities of herbs used in traditional Thai medicine.
Learn about Traditional Thai Medicine herbal packs and how to use them in your personal life or massage practice! This is a fun, relaxed, interesting, hands-on workshop full of useful information about how to add herbal medicine to your life and practice.
Workshop includes one herbal compress to make, use in class, and take home. There may also be additional packs available for sale.
See, smell, taste, and touch the herbs as we read and hear about their medicinal properties while cutting and chopping fresh and dried herbs to make our own cloth poultice/compress. Then steam and apply the warm compress during a short massage at the end of the day.
We will use a combination of over 15 dried herbs and flowers that are sent to ITM directly from Thailand, with local fresh herbs added as the seasons allow. The medicinal plants will include
- lemongrass
- eucalyptus
- ginger
- turmeric
- camphor
- basil
- lavender
- sage
- rose
We will spend the day exploring the traditional healing properties of each herb by passing them around to smell/taste/touch/chop/mash as we prepare them for the compresses, wrap them in a cotton cloth, tie it up into a compress bundle, moisten them with steam, and then you will be shown how to do a short massage with the compresses applied over clothing.
The herbal compresses are a great add-on to Swedish massage (a bit like hot stone because of their heat retention, but softer and more pliable in your hand). They are also a bit like aromatherapy (because of their medicinal qualities, but with the added benefit of warm steam). The herbal packs are wonderfully therapeutic when used during a traditional Thai massage or as an added bonus with a ‘regular’ massage, being placed on specific parts of the body that need special attention.
You get the added benefit of increasing your knowledge of herbs to use in your personal daily life to support healthy living (cooking, topically, making teas, etc). You’ll also learn great ways to use these traditional medicinal herbs in your personal home life. (Note: while you will be shown how to use the packs while applying a few stretches, this class does not include teaching Thai massage).
- Things to Bring:
- If you have any fresh or dried medicinal herbs at home, please bring them to share in class. Extra scissors and sharp knives are also helpful. For the massage portion we usually work over clothing, so bring (or wear) loose comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. The fresh herbs sometimes make a light yellow stain so bring clothing you don’t mind if this happens to.
NOTE: the focus of this class is on learning about and making the compresses; it does not include the teaching of specific thai massage movements, but is instead geared to adding herbal compresses to whatever modality you already practice. Class includes a comprehensive textbook and one pack you make and use in class to take home and use again. Additional packs and loose herbs may be available for purchase.
